Silver Age, out now on Deutsche Grammophon, illustrates the artistic audacity and brilliance of a turbulent era in Russia’s history, with works by three of its pioneering composers. As Trifonov explains, “The Silver Age period of art in Russian history is not a single aesthetic, but describes an increasingly fractured social, political and intellectual environment – a cocktail of different artistic expressions, in agitated interaction.” He continues “Scriabin wished to combine all aesthetic experience in a single, mystical, musical vision; Stravinsky unified the arts through a radical re-interpretation of ballet; Prokofiev, meanwhile, embraced cinema as the most complete and modern synthesis of the senses.”

Listen here | Watch the trailer

Read more in Pianist Magazine.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM “Trifonov fits into the Mariinsky sound world like a glove, and handles the big first movement cadenza, as well as the Piano Sonata No. 8…with equal servings of musicality and power..a good showcase for Trifonov’s raindrop-like single notes, beautifully turned phrases, and tastefully controlled fluctuations in tune with a sympathetic Gergiev and the Mariinsky” Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 2, Andantino; “Silver Age”; Daniil Trifonov, piano; Mariinsky Orchestra; Valery Gergiev, conductor (Deutsche Grammophon) The thoughtful pianist Daniil Trifonov explores the music of Russia’s so-called “silver age” of the early 20th century on a fascinating album that offers various solo works and concertos by Scriabin, Prokofiev and Stravinsky.
“There is plenty of virtuoso playing to be heard, but the character of Trifonov’s performances is not simply that. Stravinsky’s technically dazzling Three Movements from Petrushka come across precise, detailed, whimsical, rather than an attempt to mirror an orchestral showpiece on the piano. Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 8 similarly is much more than just wartime driving energy.”
