Alexi Kenney Receives Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award

Violinist Alexi Kenney is among fourteen young musicians – including a string quartet, two piano trios, a pianist, violist and percussionist – who have been selected to join the Borletti-Buitoni Trust’s roster of Award and Fellowship winners for 2020.

Awards of £30,000 and Fellowships of £20,000 are given to recipients for the purpose of advancing their musical careers across a wide range of projects, and the Trust also offers advice and practical support alongside the financial endowments to the selected musicians.

The recipient of a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, violinist Alexi Kenney has been named “a talent to watch” by the New York Times, which also noted his “architect’s eye for structure and space and a tone that ranges from the achingly fragile to full-bodied robustness.”

The 2019/20 season sees Alexi performing as soloist with the Oregon, Virginia, New Haven, Hawaii, and California symphonies, and returning to the Phillips Collection. His recent solo violin and electronics recital at the 92nd Street Y was praised by the New York Times, noting “Mr. Kenney’s peaks and valleys of passion, and his more modern approach to the score, stood out even among his other interpretations of Bach. He made it seem, though, as if this were the only possible way to play the music.”

In recent years, Alexi was soloist with the Detroit, Indianapolis, Columbus, Portland, and Omaha symphonies, the St. Paul and Lausanne Chamber orchestras, and gave recitals at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern festival. He has appeared as guest concertmaster of both the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
