Bramwell Tovey 1953-2022
With profound sadness Opus 3 mourns the passing of conductor Bramwell Tovey, who on July 12 finally succumbed to the rare cancer that he had been battling since May 2019. His enthusiasm for the work he’d been doing with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and school along with his Principal Guest position in Quebec, additional guest conducting engagements, and the excitement about the job he was about to begin in Sarasota, never wavered and kept him determined to battle the pneumonia and cancer recurrence he faced in the last 6 months.
A kind, warm and empathetic musician with a sharp wit which entranced audiences and orchestra members alike, his breadth of knowledge and intellect always made his programs particularly memorable.
He died peacefully at his home in Rhode Island with Verena, his partner of the last, difficult years and his two daughters by his side. He will be greatly missed.
Read the heartfelt tributes to his work with several orchestras in the Toronto Globe & Mail, The Boston Musical Intelligencer, and the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
