The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma will perform several concerts in Europe during Silkroad’s 15th-anniversary celebration including their first-ever performances in Turkey and Luxembourg.

In little more than a month, we’ll board planes in all corners of the world and head for Turkey! After rehearsing and exploring in Istanbul, we head to the beautiful coastal city of Izmir, for the first performance of our Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma 2014 Europe concert tour.

These will be our first-ever performances in Turkey—with concerts in Izmir and in Istanbul’s brand-new Zorlu Center—and in Luxembourg. We’re also thrilled to be returning to Paris and Amsterdam as well, all with performers representing musical traditions from around the world:

Kinan Azmeh, clarinet (Syria) Jeffrey Beecher, bass (USA) Mike Block, cello (USA) Nicholas Cords, viola (USA) Sandeep Das, tabla (India) Haruka Fujii, percussion (Japan) Johnny Gandelsman, violin (Israel/Russia) Joseph Gramley, percussion (USA) Colin Jacobsen, violin (USA) Kayhan Kalhor, kamancheh (Iran) Yo-Yo Ma, cello (USA) Cristina Pato, gaita, piano (Spain) Shane Shanahan, percussion (USA) Mark Suter, percussion (Switzerland/USA) Wu Man, pipa (China) Wu Tong, sheng, suona (China)

In Istanbul we’ll be joined by Aynur, an extraordinary local singer of Kurdish ancestry, who will be a special guest vocalist for the world premiere of Kayhan’s Layers of Loneliness. Kayhan’s new work incorporates folk melodies and improvisation based on three Kurdish poems about love, loss, and the longing to find a loved one.

In Izmir, Paris, Amsterdam, and Luxembourg, the Ensemble will debut an arrangement of Ibn Arabi Postlude, which Kinan created for this tour. His Ibn Arabi Suite was inspired by the writings of the titular 13th-century Arab Muslim mystic and Sufi philosopher.

Last but certainly not least, we are excited that filming will continue on location in Turkey for The Sound of Silk, the documentary in progress by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (check out his 20 Feet from Stardom).
